Sophie Davis School Global Brigades Chapter

Global Brigades is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Since 2004, Global Brigades has mobilized tens of thousands of university students and professionals through skill-based programs that work in partnership with community members to improve quality of life in under resourced regions while respecting local culture.

Global Brigades offers 10 different 7-9 day brigade programs in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua addressing needs in health and economic development. Each program has been developed in conjunction with community members and students to empower community members and leaders, while engaging students to deliver high impact solutions. Each brigade requires between 15-25 volunteers depending on the program and is organized through student Chapters on university campuses or through professional Chapters at companies.

During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed practitioners in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
